Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis strongly condemns documents adopted by Parliaments of Belgium and Netherlands

52

“On April 16, 2026, the Chambers of Representatives of Belgium and the Netherlands adopted resolutions aimed at undermining the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process and the efforts undertaken by both countries to establish an atmosphere of peace and cooperation in the region. Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis strongly condemns and rejects these unilateral and biased documents, which refer in a distorted manner to the sovereign territory of our country and are based on false claims and ungrounded accusations,” Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis said in a statement.

According to the statement, these documents, which distort the history and consequences of the conflict that existed between Azerbaijan and Armenia and which are brought forth by the unsound and racist imagination of the traditionally anti-Azerbaijani, Islamophobic circles, constitute a flagrant violation of international law and rule of law, as well as represent a provocation targeting the continuing peace process in the region which is at its sensitive stage currently.

The adoption of these documents, particularly at the time of another meeting of the Speakers of Parliament of Azerbaijan and Armenia, clearly demonstrate that the “initiators’” true intentions are not to promote peace and dialogue, but to incite hostility and revenge.

“The absence of any reference to the historic Washington Peace Summit in the document adopted by the Belgian House of Representatives, as well as the failure to mention the outcomes of the Summit, including the initialing of the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia”, indicate the “competence” of the authors of the resolution and those who voted in its favor on the subject, confirming that it is yet another example of their chronic bias,” the statement noted.

“Presenting individuals convicted of war crimes as “prisoners of war” and demanding their release is contrary to international law. The trials of these individuals have been deemed lawful by international mechanisms, while the International Court of Justice and the UN Working Group have rejected claims against Azerbaijan.

“We expect the concerned states to which the above-mentioned groundless calls are addressed and the European Union to refrain from disruptive interference in the peace process, and we are calling upon them to take the necessary measures to ensure that no such provocative steps will ever be repeated,” the statement added.

“Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis demands that the Parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands should put an end to the campaign of hatred of Azerbaijan, as well as to steps undermining efforts to strengthen peace in the region. Such actions not only encourage revanchist forces acting against peace but also harm the declared security and economic interests of the European Union in the region,” the statement emphasized.
