Pushkin’s 'The Captain’s Daughter' Featured in The New Yorker’s Summer Reading List
The American weekly magazine The New Yorker has included Alexander Pushkin’s novella The Captain’s Daughter in its summer recommendation list titled "Pocket Reads". The selection features nine short books perfect for a one-day read while relaxing on the beach or traveling.
The book was recommended by Jennifer Wilson, a staff writer and specialist in Russian literature. She noted that contrary to the stereotype of Russian classics being "heavyweight", Pushkin’s masterpiece stands out for its brevity, simplicity, and fast-paced dynamic. Wilson described it as a "vibrant political work." In the English translation by Robert and Elizabeth Chandler, the novella is just 192 pages long.
Alongside Pushkin, the list includes works by Gerald Durrell, Muriel Spark, Patrick Modiano, and Nancy Mitford.
