Baku hosts opening ceremony of 2026 U17 World Wrestling Championships
An opening ceremony of the 2026 U17 World Wrestling Championships was held at the National Gymnastics Arena, in Baku, Azerbaijan, on July 27.
Addressing the event, Mikayil Jabbarov, Minister of Economy, President of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation, highlighted Azerbaijan’s rich experience in hosting prestigious sporting events. He also highlighted the existing close collaboration between the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and the United World Wrestling (UWW).
According to him, up to 700 athletes from over 60 countries will vie for medals.
In his remarks, Farid Gayibov, Minister of Youth and Sports, underscored the care and attention shown by the Azerbaijani government to the development of sporting sector, adding that Baku has been declared the World Capital of Sport for 2026, attributing this landmark achievement to the successful sporting policy pursued by the Azerbaijani President.
Other speakers included Chingiz Huseynzada, Vice-President of Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee; and Nenad Lalovic, UWW President.
The event, running until August 2, proceeded with an artistic program.
