Scientists discussed the future of the Caspian Sea
New areas of land have appeared in the Caspian Sea. They were discovered near Kulaly Island in the Mangystau Region. Scientists attribute these changes to the ongoing drying up of the sea. Ecological and climate threats became the main topic of the "Climate Talks" international discussion in Aktau today. Researchers, diplomats, and environmentalists discussed the results of scientific observations and measures aimed at preserving the unique ecosystem, a "24KZ" correspondent reports. The Caspian is changing its contours. According to the Kazakh Research Institute of the Caspian Sea, from 1996 to 2025, the water level decreased by about 2 meters 45 centimeters. In certain areas of the northeastern coast over the past 10 years, the sea has receded by more than 20 kilometers. According to scientists' forecasts, the shallowing will continue in the future. The scale of the changes is being studied on both sides of the sea. The research results were presented in Aktau. This international discussion is not being held for the first time. Among the participants are specialists from Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, as well as representatives from Germany and the United Nations Development Programme.
